South Africa’s Eastern Cape is one of the country’s most rewarding, and most underrated, safari regions. Malaria-free, uncrowded and strikingly diverse, it offers Big Five wilderness without the long-haul logistics of the better-known northern parks. Here’s what makes it special, and how to experience it from Founders Lodge.

Why the Eastern Cape

The region is malaria-free, which makes it a reassuring choice for families and for year-round travel. Its landscapes shift from dense thicket to open plains within a single drive, supporting a rare, biodiverse biome and a wide variety of wildlife, and far fewer vehicles at a sighting than you’ll find in the busiest reserves.
Getting here
Founders Lodge lies near Sidbury, roughly 73 km from Gqeberha, about a 1 hour 15 minute drive. Gqeberha connects to Cape Town (about 1h 25m by air) and Johannesburg (about 1h 35m). Road transfers can be arranged at additional cost, or you can self-drive from the N2.
The Big Five, and well beyond
Expert-guided game drives run twice daily, with the chance to see lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo across the reserve and the greater Shamwari conservancy. Beyond the drives, the experience deepens: rhino monitoring with the team, eye-level sightings from the sunken photographic hide, and guided walks that reveal the smaller details of the bush.
A destination for families

Founders welcomes children (from age 4), and the accredited Bear Grylls Survival Academy turns young guests into junior adventurers with hands-on bushcraft, making it a genuine multigenerational safari.
