A Big Five Safari on a More Personal Scale

Founders Lodge offers safari at the scale of a private home. With only seven suites, there is no convoy leaving the lodge, and each drive can respond to wildlife movement and conditions rather than a prescribed route.
Game drives take place twice daily across Founders Reserve, with traversing rights on the adjacent Shamwari Private Game Reserve. Between drives, guests can spend time at the sunken photographic hide, walk the reserve with a ranger, learn about the rhino monitoring carried out here, or simply watch the waterhole from the lodge.
Set in South Africa’s malaria-free Eastern Cape, Founders brings together Big Five game viewing, close observation and a conservation legacy that remains part of daily life on the reserve.
MORNING AND LATE AFTERNOON
Big Five Game Drives
Open-vehicle game drives across Founders Reserve and the adjacent Shamwari Private Game Reserve.
Twice each day, guests leave Founders Lodge in an open safari vehicle with a qualified field guide. Drives take place across Founders Reserve, with traversing rights on the adjacent Shamwari Private Game Reserve, giving access to a wider range of habitats and wildlife.
Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo share this landscape with giraffe, zebra, kudu, springbok, impala and blesbok. The ranger works from tracks, calls, weather and recent movement, so no drive follows a fixed route. Time may be spent following one sighting carefully, or on the birds and smaller animals that are often missed when attention stays only on the Big Five.
Morning drives include a pause for coffee and rusks in the field. In the late afternoon, the stop is for a sundowner before the light fades and the vehicle returns to the lodge.
AT THE WATERHOLE
The Sunken Photographic Hide
Built below ground beside the Founders waterhole, the hide places guests at eye level with the animals that come down to drink. From here, wildlife can be watched without the movement or elevation of a vehicle, and photographers can work from a low, unobtrusive vantage point.
Rhino, giraffe, zebra, kudu, warthog, bushbuck, impala and birdlife are all part of the reserve around the waterhole. What appears depends on the time of day, season and temperature, which is precisely what makes the hide worth returning to.
Bring a camera, or bring nothing. The experience is equally rewarding when the point is simply to sit quietly and wait.
ON FOOT
Rhino Walking Safari
On foot, the reserve becomes more detailed. Tracks carry meaning, sound travels differently, and the distance between you and an animal is judged with far greater care.
A qualified ranger leads the walk on Founders Reserve, setting the route, pace and viewing distance according to the group, wildlife movement and the conditions of the day. Rhino are a defining presence here, and the guiding team’s knowledge is informed by the monitoring work that continues on the reserve throughout the year.
Springbok, impala, giraffe, zebra, kudu, blesbok and nyala may be seen along the way, with bushbuck or warthog sometimes crossing the route. The experience is subject to the ranger’s assessment, with the animals’ space taking priority throughout.
FOR YOUNGER GUESTS
Bear Grylls Survival Academy
A two-hour outdoor session built around practical bush skills.
As part of the Kids Conservation Warriors programme, the Bear Grylls Survival Academy takes younger guests outdoors for a two-hour session with one of the lodge’s guides.
Knot work, bushcraft and self-rescue skills are demonstrated, practised and put to use. The emphasis is on resourcefulness, teamwork and confidence, with the reserve as the setting rather than a classroom.
The programme is designed for children, although older siblings and parents often find themselves joining in. The lodge team can advise how the session may fit into the rhythm of your stay.
AROUND THE TABLE
Dining at Founders
Dining at Founders carries the ease of a private home. Breakfast is arranged around the morning’s plans, with hot dishes, seasonal fruit, granola and coffee. Lunch is the slower meal, served beside the pool or prepared as a picnic overlooking one of the waterholes.
Dinner may be in the dining room, where every guest gathers at one table, or in the boma under the open sky. Afterwards, the Founders Bar and billiards table offer a natural place to linger.
The setting may change from one day to the next, but meals remain generous, relaxed and shared.
