How to Get to Founders Lodge: Flights, Drives & Transfers

Jul 2, 2026

Planning GuidePublished 2 July 20264 min read

One of the practical advantages of an Eastern Cape safari is that it is straightforward to reach. Founders Lodge is accessed by a short domestic flight and a scenic drive, without the long transfers or light-aircraft connections some safari regions require.

This guide sets out how to reach the lodge from each of South Africa’s main gateways, including flight times, the final drive, transfer options and self-drive directions.

In this guide

  • The short version
  • Where Founders Lodge is located
  • Flying in
  • The drive from Gqeberha
  • Arriving by air charter
  • Timing your arrival
  • Which arrival suits you?

The Short Version

Founders Lodge is located near Sidbury in the Eastern Cape, approximately a 1 hour 15 minute drive from Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). Travellers fly into Gqeberha, roughly 1 hour 25 minutes from Cape Town, or 1 hour 35 minutes from Johannesburg, and then drive or arrange a transfer for the final leg. Self-drive is straightforward, and road transfers can be arranged at additional cost.

Where Founders Lodge Is Located

The lodge is near Sidbury, inland from the coast between Gqeberha and Makhanda (Grahamstown), on the Founders Reserve. It offers a Big Five safari, reached with traversing rights on Shamwari, while remaining easily accessible from the coast. That accessibility is one of the reasons the region works well both for a first safari and as the conclusion to a wider Cape and Garden Route trip.

Flying In

The nearest airport is Gqeberha (Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport), the practical gateway for most guests.

  • From Cape Town: approximately a 1 hour 25 minute direct flight.
  • From Johannesburg: approximately a 1 hour 35 minute direct flight.
  • From the UK, Europe or the US: connect via Johannesburg or Cape Town onto the Gqeberha leg. The full journey is one international flight plus a short domestic connection, with minimal time difference on arrival.

From the airport, the lodge is approximately an hour and a quarter by road.

The Drive from Gqeberha

The final leg is a well-signed drive of about 1 hour 15 minutes. There are two options.

Self-drive. The route is manageable in any vehicle. From the N2, cross the Bushman’s River, follow the signs towards Sidbury, then continue on a gravel road for the final stretch to the reserve. Reservations provide full directions with each booking.

Road transfer. A transfer from Gqeberha airport can be arranged through the reservations team. Transfers are at additional cost and are not included in the stay, so they are best requested at the time of booking.

Arriving by Air Charter

For guests who are short on time or combining several lodges, a private air charter into the region can be arranged on request. This is the exception rather than the norm, most guests fly to Gqeberha and drive, but the option is available through the reservations team.

Timing Your Arrival

Two details are worth planning around: check-in is from 14:00, and check-out is 11:00. Landing in Gqeberha in the late morning allows time to reach the lodge and settle in before the first afternoon game drive. A morning departure flight pairs well with a final dawn drive and breakfast before leaving. For how this shapes a two-, three- or five-night stay, see our guide on how many days you need on safari.

Which Arrival Suits You?

Coming from Recommended route
Cape Town ~1h25 flight to Gqeberha, then ~1h15 drive or transfer

Overseas (UK / EU / US) International flight via Johannesburg or Cape Town, then Gqeberha, then drive or transfer
Touring the Garden Route Self-drive east, Founders is the natural conclusion to the route
